Shooting Board: Also Miter Shoot

A Jig used as a guide in planing or squaring the edge of a Workpiece, a stereotype plate, etc. In carpentry and woodworking, a Shooting Board is used where greater accuracy is required -- e.g., picutre frames -- than can be obtained with the Miter Box. Called also "Miter Shooting Board" or "Chute Board" or, "Jack Board".

Graham Balckburn claims that, as a term, Shooting Board is more widely used in England. In America, he continues, the device is called "Chute Board". Originally a Jig designed to help Craftsmen working with Hand Tools obtain accurate edges -- such as those needed for Picture Frames -- Shooting Boards originally consisted of two boards, one wider than the other. Fixed together, the two boards create a "space", where  a workpiece can be placed securely so its edges -- especially End Grain -- can be planed accurately. Before being dispaced by the more-efficient and versatile Jointer, Shooting Boards achieved a respected level of sophistication and functionality.
